Hydrospheric and Biospheric Sciences Laboratory EPO

The primary goal of the Education Plan for the Hydrospheric and Biospheric Sciences Laboratory is to promote the educational value and significance of the scientific research performed within the Laboratory and its associated branches while supporting the Earth-Sun Exploration Division's education initiatives and objectives. The educational value of this science is based upon its implementation within the constructs of the public sector, principally; primary, secondary, and higher education classrooms and curriculums. This science shall not only provide tools for the instructor, but shall also benefit the students by developing a foundation for future research in the hydrospheric and biospheric sciences.

Present and Past Roles

Present:
Brian serves as the Laboratory public liaison for education, flight, field, and research projects. He is responsible for directing the preparation of materials for the education sections of new DDF, REASoN, ESSP, and NRA proposals. He prepares and reports on education performance metrics, provides educator training, presents at/develops workshops and conferences, and serves as the Laboratory liaison for the Earth/Sun Exploration Division's education, outreach, and public relations effort by forming Division-wide plans, objectives, and goals as they relate to Earth System Science mandates and NASA HQ education priorities. He also works with universities, K-12 schools, science centers, periodicals, and television to promote the science and education activities of the Laboratory and serves on the Earth/Sun Exploration Division's Formal Education Working Group and the NASA Explorer School's Steering Committee. He is also the Education Lead for the Cold Land Processes Pathfinder (CLPP) mission, EPO Manager for the Atlantic Seeding Hurricane Experiment (ASHE), and the Education Co-Lead for the Hydrospheric States (HYDROS) mission.

Past:
Before coming to Goddard, Brian was a high school science teacher and a NASA Goddard Teacher Ambassador and was responsible for following the two-semester, block-scheduled year, instructing three eighty-eight minute Earth and space science classes a day. This role involved preparing and implementing unit and daily lesson plans, maintaining a comfortable and technologically-suitable environment, and continuing improvement of the current curriculum within the Earth and space sciences. He served as the Saturday School Discipline instructor and was the faculty for the Envirothon Team.
