Science Reporting -- A Journalist's Perspective
Earth science is key to many of the big news stories of our time -- from natural disasters like earthquakes and volcano eruptions to complex issues like global climate change. Many would say the efforts of researchers to better understand these processes go generally under-reported, or even mis-reported, in a crowded news marketplace. At the same time, the scientific community must face the challenge of getting the information out in a clear, concise manner...explaining difficult, sometimes obscure concepts to non-experts, and putting it all into perspective. Science journalists work in the zone where these realities meet... waging a daily battle to sort out the important from the trivial, and figure out how to tell the story in an understandable, engaging way.
